4/21/18 Out of the Darkness Campus Walk Sponsored by Ammerman Campus Honors Club

AFSPlogoOut of the Darkness Campus Walk
Sponsored by Ammerman Campus Honors Club

Saturday, April 21, 2018 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM

TO:                  The College Community

FROM:           Dr. Thomas S. Tyson, College Associate Dean for Mental Health Services

SUBJECT:     Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

The College will be hosting its second annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk on Saturday, April 21st from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on the Ammerman Campus in Selden.  This event, which seeks to increase awareness about suicide and raise funds to fight it, will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).  Join a quarter of a million people from hundreds of cities across all 50 states to raise awareness and funds that will save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

The campus walk is being sponsored by the Ammerman Campus Honors Club.  Anyone interested in further information on the walk can stop by tables in the Babylon Student Center from 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday or Wednesday, April 17th or 18th.

Funds raised through this event allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.  We are looking for supporters in the college community who understand the growing concern about suicidal behavior and are willing to do something to bolster efforts to prevent suicide.

For more information, please go online and visit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) or their Out of the Darkness Walks-New York sites.

Thank you in advance for considering providing support to this important initiative.

On Tuesday November 21, 2017 Suffolk Community College Foundation Board Member Belinda Pagdanganan (National Grid, Government Relations) visited Michael J. Grant Campus Food Pantry. The Food Pantry supports 200 – 250 students and families from Saturday 11/18/17 to Tuesday 11/22/17. Suffolk County Community College students receive turkey, ham or chicken, stuffing, canned goods, desserts and donated fresh bread from Modern Italian Bakery (631) 589-7300. Winter hats, Pepsi products and other items are donated by alumni and friends of the Food Pantry.

Professor Sister Mary Ann Borrello created the Michael J. Grant Campus food pantry and coordinates among faculty, staff and student donations. Support is provided to students that connect with Lisa Hamilton’s staff in the Office of Campus Activities and Student Leadership Development. Students receive information for additional campus and community based services upon their visit.

Alumnae Tricia Wildman ’15 and Carmen returned to campus to help advise current student volunteers who were participating in Anthropology and Social Science courses.

Suffolk Community College Foundation supports by donating $950.00 for 15 cases of turkeys from campus vendor Aramark. Special thanks to our volunteers, donors, faculty, staff, students and alumni for the generous donations.
