4/23/17 – Selden, NY: Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

Out Of the Darkness Walk

Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

Sunday, April 23, 2017 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

FROM:           Dr. Thomas S. Tyson. College Associate Dean for Mental Health Services

Subject:          Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

I am pleased to share with you that the College will be hosting an Out of the Darkness Campus Walk on Sunday, April 23rd from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on the Ammerman Campus in Selden.  This event, which seeks to increase awareness about suicide and raise funds to fight it, will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

Join a quarter of a million people from hundreds of cities across all 50 states to raise awareness and funds that will save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. This will be the first Out of the Darkness walk to take place at a college on Long Island.  We thank Ammerman Campus student, Anne Deubel, for proposing this event idea.  Anne, working  closely with Sarah Boles, Faculty Coordinator for Mental Health Services, has been able to initiate the planning necessary to introduce a local Long Island walk on a Suffolk campus.

When someone participates in the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk, they join the effort with thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.  We are looking for supporters in the college community who understand the growing concern about suicidal behavior and are willing to do something to bolster efforts to prevent suicide.

For more information, please go online and visit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) or their Out of the Darkness Walks-New York sites. To provide you with more information, there will be a meeting on Wednesday, April 5th, in the Southampton Building, Room 230 on the Ammerman Campus.  Anyone who would like to join the committee or participate in the event is invited to attend.

Thank you in advance for considering providing support to this important initiative.

Career Fair a Jump Start to Those Interested in Automotive Industry Jobs 12/7/16

career-fair-2016-12

More than three dozen auto employers — dealerships and service companies – will help jumpstart your career at the Suffolk County Community College Automotive Technology and Career Services Automotive Career Fair at the college’s Automotive Technology Center on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Auto companies from across Long Island have confirmed their attendance at the premier Auto Technology career event sponsored by Suffolk County Community College and open to those who are interested in automotive dealership management and repair opportunities.

Suffolk County Community College offers an A.A.S. degree in Automotive Technology on its Ammerman Campus in Selden.  It is a certified program that is designed to prepare students for employment as automobile technicians.

The programs offered are the Honda PACT program, the Toyota T-TEN program, the General Motors ASEP program, and the General Automotive ATAC I & ATAC II programs.

Today’s automobiles are equipped with complex computer and electronic systems that requires highly trained, skilled professionals who are competent in math, science and computer technology.  Communication and management skills are equally important for success in the field.

“Students in our program are preparing not only for their futures, but the future of their industry,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.

McKay urged those who are interested in careers in the automotive industry, either in dealership management or on the repair side of the business, to attend the one-day event.

Eastern Campus to Host American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk – Sunday, October 23, 2016

Strides Sccc 2016-7-22

Suffolk County Community College, the Suffolk Community College Foundation and the American Cancer Society are working together to bring breast cancer awareness to the Long Island community.  On Sunday, October 23, 2016 the Eastern Campus will be hosting the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.  Approximately 4,000 individuals will walk around “Ring Road” and unite as a community to raise awareness about the steps you can take to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.

Additionally, we are happy to announce that through this partnership the Foundation has created the first endowed “Breast Cancer Survivor’s and Caregiver’s Scholarship.” This scholarship will be awarded to a Suffolk student who is a survivor or has been a caregiver to someone impacted by breast cancer.

When communities participate in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks they are helping those currently fighting the disease, those who may have to fight it one day, and those who will avoid a diagnosis due to education and risk reduction.  When it comes to breast cancer, no one should walk alone.  We encourage our college community members to form a team, join a team, walk as an individual or bring a friend to the Eastern Campus. For more information or details about registering please contact Russell Malbrough at 631-451-4630.

Together we can make a difference in our community.

Celebrate the Spirit of Giving With Giving Tuesday!

By

Diverse group of Oneonta students outside looking to the right.

We just celebrated Thanksgiving, a day dedicated to being thankful for all that we have, but what about all we have to give? For that, we have Giving Tuesday. Last year, many of our campuses participated in this huge charity event and “global day dedicated to giving back” – and it was a huge success. In addition to the philanthropic efforts highlighted in our 30 Days of Giving campaign and along with the global power of Giving Tuesday, our campuses are showing their charitable spirit once again.

SUNY Broome and the University at Albany are both holding 24 hour giving campaigns on Tuesday to raise their philanthropic presence with goals of 240 donors and 750 donors, respectively. Additionally, Suffolk County Community College is hosting a Giving Tuesday event with online donations and sharing.

SUNY New Paltz is also joining the Giving Tuesday movement, with an innovative text-to-give feature, while Empire State College, Schenectady County Community College, Dutchess Community College, and SUNY Cobleskill are making efforts to encourage the spirit of giving via email and social media, using the #SUNYGiving hashtag.

This year, even President Obama acknowledged Giving Tuesday in his weekly address, saying, “There’s the generosity of Americans who take part not just in Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but Giving Tuesday – recognizing that in the holiday season, what you give is as important as what you get.”

SUNY knows it’s the perfect opportunity to give back to our communities. And you can join in too. It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your community, your club, your class, or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving and encourage others to do the same. You can join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity. Share your efforts on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with us, using the #SUNYGiving hashtag to uplift the Giving Tuesday efforts on our campuses!
