Maserati of Long Island Donates 2016 Maserati Ghibli as Hole-in-One Prize for Suffolk Golf Classic

Your golf drive might not be the only “drive” you can show off thanks to Ferrari-Maserati of Long Island who has generously donated a hole-in-one prize of a new Maserati for the Suffolk Community College Foundation 33rd Annual Golf Classic on August 22.

A 2016 Maserati Ghibli will be driven away by a lucky golfer if he or she can score a hole-in-one on the 4th hole of the Hamlet Golf and Country Club in Commack.

Ferrari-Maserati of Long Island has been and continues to be a generous supporter of Suffolk County Community College, our foundation and students,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.

Not a golfer? Support the college by attending the awards reception and dinner.
The reception and dinner will provide another opportunity to drive a sleek Italian sports car. A Maserati Weekend experience will be auctioned along with dozens of other prizes during the dinner hour.

“Ferrari-Maserati of Long Island provides the absolute coolest hole-in-one opportunity of any golf event in our region, and the Suffolk Community College Foundation is delighted to once again partner with this great Long Island business in support of student scholarships, said Suffolk Community College Foundation Executive Director Dr. Sylvia A. Diaz.

The proceeds from the Golf Classic will support need and merit-based scholarships, emergency student loans and quality academic enrichment programs for Suffolk County Community College students. Last year, more than 500 students were helped by more than $650,000 in aid from the Suffolk Community College Foundation.

Kevin M. O’Connor, president and chief executive officer of The Bridgehampton National Bank (BNB) and a Suffolk County Community College graduate will be honored at the event.

The Classic will tee-off on Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Hamlet Golf and Country Club in Commack. Registration includes 18 holes of golf, access to the driving range and putting green, golf cart, lunch, a cocktail reception and a celebratory dinner featuring raffle drawings, auction and awards ceremony.

Early registration is $300 per golfer and $1,100 for a foursome.
Register for the Golf Classic at the Foundation’s website at www.sunysuffolk.edu/golf

Fate, Scholarship and Benefactor Add Up for Suffolk Foundation Award Recipient Quinn Favilla ’14

Suffolk County Community College graduate Quinn Favilla had not planned on attending college at Suffolk.

Quinn Favilla '14

Quinn Favilla ’14

Favilla’s plan included wrapping up a successful senior year at East Islip High School where she had excelled both academically and athletically as a member of the track team and then to attend one of the many college’s she had been accepted to that were offering her considerable scholarship money.

In Favilla’s grand plan, she would attend Binghamton University and run Division 1 track after her 2012 high school graduation.

Then fate intervened. A running injury caused Favilla to rethink where should would attend college.

“It didn’t make sense to spend the money, go into debt, and go away to a D1 school and not be able to do what I originally was going away for,” Favilla said. “Plus, I still needed to see a doctor for my injury, and needed physical therapy. My dad convinced me to go to Suffolk for a year and try it out.”

It was at Suffolk that Favilla acquired a love of math and ultimately was awarded the Frey Family Foundation Scholarship that paid for her continuing studies at Stony Brook University where she is now a senior finishing her degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics and interning at a computer technology company in Manhattan.

Favilla recently met Robert Frey of Port Jefferson, who will be honored by Suffolk County Community College at its annual Salute to Excellence Gala on May 5.

Favilla was overjoyed to meet the benefactor whose scholarship allowed her to continue her studies. The Frey Family Foundation Scholarship awarded to mathematics majors provides $20,000 per academic year to deserving students.

“The scholarship has provided nearly $270,000 in awards since 2004 to 30 students,” said Sylvia A. Diaz, Ph.D., LMSW, executive director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation.

“You not only helped me financially,” Favilla told Frey, “but you reminded me of what it feels like to be a winner again. Your scholarship helped me pay for my entire first semester at Stony Brook University, freeing me up to work and save for my senior year, and now I am debt free. Awarding me that scholarship reminded me of what it felt like to be a success in something after putting in hard work, determination and effort. After I got injured, I didn’t know if I’d ever get that winning feeling again and it felt good. You reminded me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to and work hard to achieve it, and I carried that over with me to Stony Brook University, where I’ve continued to work, learn and succeed. Suffolk was, and always will be, considered the building block to the start of my success,” Favilla said.

“Despite being one of the most affordable colleges in New York, the Suffolk Community College Foundation awarded nearly $600,000 in scholarships and aid to students last year. The annual gala helps raise a significant amount of the funds the foundation awards through merit and need-based scholarships,” Diaz said.

Suffolk Community College Foundation’s Annual Salute to Excellence Gala 2016, Suffolk County Community College: The Bridge to Opportunity is on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the Hilton Long Island in Huntington. “Suffolk County Community College is home to numerous opportunities waiting to be unlocked by curious students of all ages and all backgrounds from across our great county,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.

“Robert Frey, a class of ’78 graduate and advocate for our institution, recognizes the value of our community college as a bridge to opportunity. We thank him for his work as the secretary on our Foundation Board and as an ‘education enabler’ through the Frey Family Foundation that has awarded more than $270,000 in mathematics scholarships,” McKay said.

“Dr. Robert Frey’s generous support and insightful guidance is transformational in the lives of Suffolk’s students,” said Sylvia A. Diaz, Ph.D., LMSW, executive director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation. “We are most grateful that he and his family are committed to ensuring that New York’s largest and most comprehensive community college serves as a bridge to opportunity where our neighbors grow and learn in a student-centered environment that develops our regional workforce and provides promise for the next generation of Suffolk’s leaders.”

Dr. Frey holds a joint appointment in the Stony Brook University’s Business School and is the President of the University’s Research Center for High Frequency Finance. He has been an adjunct professor and chair of the advisory board for the Program on Financial Mathematics at the University of Chicago and currently serves as CEO of FQS Capital Partners, Ltd., an investment management firm based in New York and London, and CEO of Harbor Financial Management, his family office.

His public service and charitable activities include service on the Boards of the Guardian Angels, Hope House Ministries, the Museum of Mathematics, the Stony Brook Foundation, and the Suffolk Community College Foundation.

Dr. Frey lives in Port Jefferson with his wife Kathryn and children, Michael and Megan.

A Raffle Winner’s Story – 2015 Salute to Excellence Gala & Maserati of Long Island

Suffolk Community College Foundation’s 2015 Salute to Excellence Gala & Maserati of Long Island – A Raffle Winner’s Story
Written by Bill Harney, Keeping Current Matters 3/10/2016

The story starts when my team and I attended the 2015 Salute to Excellence Gala in support of our dear friend Greg Garritano. During dinner, some of the event representatives were selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a weekend with a Maserati (courtesy of Maserati of Long Island). At our table, we joked about how cool it would be to cruise down the Expressway with our hair blowing in the wind, driving around in this super car. A few of us decided to buy some tickets, but my father – always the one to make a splash – decided to buy a large roll of tickets. He knew it was going to a great cause and figured “what the heck.”

As the event was going on, and we had these raffle tickets in front of us, we all started talking about a very special 11 year old. He’s the son of one of our team members, and the nephew of one of our leaders. And he’s got Type 1 Diabetes and is one of the strongest people I know. He loves racing cars (he competes at the race tracks out east) and he doesn’t let anyone tell him he “can’t” do something… especially his mother 🙂 At some point during the dinner, we all decided that if any of us win the raffle prize, we would somehow give this awesome experience to Harley… he’d enjoy it more than anyone else!

Well, this story wouldn’t be very entertaining without this part I guess. When the raffle was being announced, we all had our tickets in front of us. Nobody expected to win. There were hundreds of people at this event and we only had a tiny fraction of the tickets. But then it happened. They started calling out the numbers and they matched everyone on my ticket. I was mortified… but in a good way. I knew that it would be a scene to officially accept the prize and I’m not the type to want the spotlight. But as I walked up to accept the prize, I remembered Harley and a sudden calm came over me. Then excitement. I knew that this little guy, who gives me a lot of inspiration, was going to have a great time. And I knew his mom and dad would be super excited as well. That feeling was totally worth the pseudo-embarrassment of having hundreds of people stand, clap and then stare at me while I sat in this $100,000+ car.

When we got back to the office the next day, we let his mom know what had happened and that we wanted to give the prize to Harley. She was floored. You see, one of the other reasons we knew it would be awesome for Harley to be the “front man” for this prize is he’s an official ambassador for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation… at 11 years old. This kid is amazing!

And I’m attaching a picture here of Harley and is younger sister Rachel getting ready to go out in the Maserati (and no, Harley wasn’t able to drive, but he did have an awesome time).
