Suffolk County Community College The 6th Teaching of Writing Festival 10/26/18

The 6th Teaching of Writing Festival

Suffolk County Community College

Friday, October 26th from 9:00am-2:00pm

The sixth Teaching of Writing Festival will be held at Suffolk County Community College (Ammerman Campus, Selden NY) on Friday October 26th from 9:00am-2:00pm through the auspices of the Ammerman English Department and the Office of Academic Affairs. This conference/festival is for teachers, students, and administrators to learn, share, and celebrate different approaches to the teaching of writing. We are inviting teachers and students from local high schools, colleges, and universities to explore the diversity of academic writing and how we can bridge the gaps between high schools, two year colleges, and four year universities. The theme of this year’s conference is the link between journalism, news literacy, and teaching writing: how these forms of composing and research mutually inform each other as well as the pedagogies of teaching both subjects. Our keynote speaker will be Howard Schneider, Dean of the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University.

These professional development workshops will be given by faculty from across Long Island to give our conference/festival a more diverse program. Proposed workshops  include syllabus construction, creating high school writing centers, college writing centers, evaluating student writing, assessing student performance and progress, BRIDGE programs, developmental writing, creating in class assignments, successful writing prompts, academic integrity/plagiarism, collaborations between high schools, two year, and four year schools, teaching for/against COMMON CORE, writing beyond COMMON CORE, journalistic approaches to composition, and research and revision preparation for multiple writing situations. We are also inviting students to participate as well so that faculty can gain more holistic and practical insights into the writing process and how teachers and students conceive, perceive, and live writing in all aspects of academic, civic, and community life. The Teaching of Writing Festival will provide speakers, workshops, breakout sessions, relevant activities, and opportunities to discuss, explore, and celebrate diverse teaching methods in order to enhance and expand practices of writing, composition, and rhetoric. This event is open to all who are interested in writing so please share this with your colleagues!

Proposed Schedule:

of the recognition they deserved. In 1996, Buffalo Soldier was one of twelve plays selected as the Best American Plays for Young Audiences and has been performed at the Pentagon in honor of African American History Month
