Can you find it in your heart to donate to a Suffolk County Community College student in need?

“Being raised in a single parent household where my father struggled working double overtimes always made it hard for me to stay motivated, determined and focused on what mattered most, my education. With this scholarship, you have not only given me more opportunities for the future, but you have shown me that there are people that are recognizing my accomplishments and hard work that I’ve been putting in. You’ve also inspired me to work even harder going forward.” – Brentwood, NY Suffolk County Community College Future Alumni

Southampton’s Dennis Exhibits at Suffolk’s Flecker Gallery

dennis-web

A solo exhibition of new photographs by Jeremy Dennis — an indigenous artist who was raised and continues to live and work on the Shinnecock Native American community in Southampton  — will be featured at Suffolk County Community College’s Flecker Gallery, on the Ammerman Campus from February 8 – March 15, 2018. The exhibition’s opening reception will be on February 8 from 1-3 pm.

 Refreshments will be served.

Dennis’ large-scale photographs presented in the exhibition and catalog offer a fictional narrative that flips the historical script.  Dennis’ work is borne of his experiences of the myriad challenges of contemporary indigenous life.

The images are intended to arrest the viewer and transport the audience into the role of the subjects – unsuspecting, fatally pierced; injured out of nowhere.  This bit of shock is necessary and purposeful. These photographs are both powerful and perfectly suited to our current moment in history, resonating the concerns of Dennis’ Shinnecock heritage and also harmonizing with numerous critiques of patriarchal society, white privilege, and blindness to both.

The exhibition is accompanied by full color catalog.

Please visit our website or contact the gallery directly for directions, to schedule an appointment, or to request a catalog or more information.

Suffolk County Community College offers an A.A.S. degree in Automotive Technology that is National Automotive Technician’s Education Foundation (NATEF) certified and designed to prepare students for employment as automobile technicians and professionals at automotive service facilities.

Flashback Friday – Suffolk County Community College Business Class visits former Entrepreneurship student and Crazy Crepe Owner

CrazyCrepeLogo113x141November 6, 2016 – Twenty students enrolled in Business Administration BUS 123: Entrepreneurship course on the Ammerman campus, visited the Crazy Crepe restaurant, founded and operated by former Suffolk County Community College student, Kevin Muller.

Kevin Muller, Crazy Crepe Owner & former Suffolk County Community College student.

The entrepreneurship course focuses on the study of the environment of small business and  the functions and philosophy of entrepreneurs. Topics include problems in initiating and achieving success in new small business, including financing, marketing, management and legal governmental relationships involved. This onsite visit to a local business located minutes away from the Ammerman campus in Selden, NY gave the students the opportunity to have a unique learning experience as part of their business education.

Starting with a brief account of his educational background, Mr. Muller shared the process of selecting, opening and reopening his business. With initial capital funding of $20,000 which he raised through working full –time and living at home, he opened his first yogurt shop at the Selden location, while maintaining his full-time job. Shortly after realizing the business would not be successful, he used a $3,000 line of credit to re-brand the store and offer crepes using a family recipe from his grandmother.  20171106_180338_1510163919744

In addition to talking about raising capital, Mr. Muller explained several of his business practices to the students that brought their course content to life. He spoke walking the neighborhoods, speaking to customers and surveying potential new locations as part of his research process of opening new locations. He frequently uses community connections and offers to host fundraisers and participate in industry events to gain more customer familiarity with the Crazy Crepe brand and test out new products. He meets with the staff at each of his four locations and chooses to lead by example with a hands-on management style. In addition to managing his current businesses, he shared his vision for a new brand and possible franchising opportunities with the students.

Students enrolled in Business Administration BUS 123: Entrepreneurship course

In a post-visit class discussion with Professor Lauren Liburd the students expressed their appreciation of the experience. They were encouraged to see a young entrepreneur from Long Island, whom they could relate to. They recognized his work ethic and found assurance in their ability to be successful entrepreneurs, should they apply the same principles to their business aspirations. This experience gave students a first-hand look into the possibilities of utilizing their business education to further their goals and dreams of success.

Will You Make a Difference in the Life of A Student Today?

GivingTuesday Logos

Your gift to the Suffolk Community College Foundation is a critical resource that empowers students, faculty and staff to make seemingly impossible ideas possible and turns dreams into realities, all while helping to build a solid foundation for the future of Suffolk County Community College. Your gift to the Annual Fund will have immediate and ongoing impact.

As a special bonus, you’ll receive a beautiful customized Suffolk fleece jacket if you decide to contribute $100 or more.

Here is what our students receiving support say:

“I am writing to express how grateful I am to have received the Student Hardship Grant. When I had heard that I was selected for this I was more than thrilled to know my financial burdens would be lightened. It is also very helpful to know that there are people out there who care about the success of others when it is hard enough to believe in yourself. I have experienced difficulty during school and I must say that this has helped me in so many ways.” – Resident of Southold, NY

“This foundation has honestly made me more aware of the needs of others and wanting to help those less fortunate than me. Just the other day a homeless lady sitting outside of Taco Bell asked me for spare change to get something to eat. I didn’t have any extra money so I gave her the food I had ordered for myself.”  – Resident of Coram, NY
