Eastern Campus to Host American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk – Sunday, October 22, 2017

Suffolk County Community College  October 13, 2017

TO:                  The College Community

FROM:           Dr. Sylvia A. Diaz, Foundation Executive Director

Suffolk County Community College, the Suffolk Community College Foundation and the American Cancer Society are working together to bring breast cancer awareness to the Long Island community.  On Sunday, October 22nd, the College’s Eastern Campus will be the host site for one of the two major American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks (registration at 7:30 a.m./walk starts at 8:30 a.m.) taking place this fall.  We anticipate that on that day thousands of individuals will walk around Ring Road and unite as a community to raise awareness about the steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.  For the second year in a row, we are proud to serve as a Flagship Sponsor for this event.

Last year through this partnership, the Foundation established the “Breast Cancer Survivor’s and Caregiver’s Scholarship.” This scholarship is awarded to a Suffolk student who is a survivor or has been a caregiver to someone impacted by breast cancer.

When communities participate in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks they are helping those currently fighting the disease, those who may have to fight it one day, and those who will avoid a diagnosis due to education and risk reduction.  When it comes to breast cancer, no one should walk alone.  We encourage our college community members to form a team, join a team, walk as an individual or bring a friend to the Eastern Campus. For more information or details about registering please contact Russell Malbrough at the College’s Foundation at 631-451-4630.

By joining together, we can make a difference in our community.

Suffolk County Community College has announced a fundraising effort to endow the John J. and Kevin Foley Family Scholarship, recently established to honor Kevin and his father, who have both been dedicated to supporting the College and its students. This endeavor will recognize the numerous contributions made by two gentlemen who have played major roles in the history of the College over the full course of their careers.

Kevin’s father, John J. Foley, was a remarkable Suffolk County legislator who served his constituents for 18 years — advocating for labor, education and health-related causes. He acted forcefully and believed strongly in the importance of education. John Foley dedicated his life to public service, including tenure as a member of the College’s Board of Trustees.

Any contribution to this worthwhile cause will be helpful and appreciated. Thank you.

Suffolk – St. John’s University Create Seamless Pathway from Community College to University

 Watch Event Video

Suffolk County Community College and St. John’s University have entered into a new partnership to ensure that students will be able to transfer seamlessly from Suffolk to St. John’s. The institutions formally announced the agreement at a signing ceremony on March 30 at Suffolk County Community College’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood.
The agreement signed by the colleges’ presidents provides 33 associates-to-bachelor degree programs for students who will be provided an academic pathway to transfer to St. John’s University. St. John’s University will also generously award an annual $17,000 scholarship to students who attain a set academic goal.

“Enhancing access and affordability to higher education is a shared goal of Suffolk County Community College and St. John’s University,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.  “This agreement will further that goal by providing a pathway for Suffolk students to complete their associate degrees at Suffolk and transition to St. John’s University to complete their baccalaureate degrees. The agreement between St. John’s University and Suffolk County Community College will provide students from the region with access to a high-quality, affordable education,” McKay said.

“This mutually beneficial academic agreement supports St. John’s strategic priorities of ensuring student success and expanding community partnerships,” said Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, Ph.D., President of St. John’s University.  “Suffolk County Community College is the largest community college in the SUNY system and we look forward to the continued matriculation of students from Suffolk to St. John’s. This partnership will establish a pathway for student success through the completion of their baccalaureate degrees at St. John’s University.”

“This new relationship with St. John’s will create incredible opportunities for Suffolk graduates.  It is a real testament and joy to share with an institution of the caliber of St. John’s University the education of Long Island’s greatest resource,” said Suffolk County Community College Dean of Instruction Dr. Paul Beaudin.

Suffolk County Community College prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Students transition to a variety of baccalaureate programs here on Long Island, throughout New York State and the nation.

Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus Hosts Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk October 23, Scholarship Established

sign-upMore than 3,000 participants are expected at Suffolk County Community College’s Eastern Campus on Sunday October 23 for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) premier event to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. In conjunction with the event, Suffolk County Community College and ACS have established the Breast Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Scholarship.

“We’re coming together to support women battling breast cancer, to remember those who’ve lost the battle, and to push for continued advances in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment,” Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said.
“We are proud to host this event for the first time on our Eastern Campus, and look forward to a long and successful relationship with the American Cancer Society and the search for a cure. I urge everyone who can to visit our beautiful campus to take part in this important event,” McKay said.

“The Suffolk Community College Foundation is celebrating this event and raising awareness of breast cancer on Long Island with the establishment of the Breast Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Scholarship”, explained Dr. Sylvia Diaz, Suffolk Community College Foundation executive director. “This is the first of its kind scholarship at Suffolk and we are delighted to provide this critical and humane support to students and families impacted by breast cancer in hopes that their studies will make a difference in the fight against this cruel disease.”
