Suffolk – St. John’s University Create Seamless Pathway from Community College to University

 Watch Event Video

Suffolk County Community College and St. John’s University have entered into a new partnership to ensure that students will be able to transfer seamlessly from Suffolk to St. John’s. The institutions formally announced the agreement at a signing ceremony on March 30 at Suffolk County Community College’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood.
The agreement signed by the colleges’ presidents provides 33 associates-to-bachelor degree programs for students who will be provided an academic pathway to transfer to St. John’s University. St. John’s University will also generously award an annual $17,000 scholarship to students who attain a set academic goal.

“Enhancing access and affordability to higher education is a shared goal of Suffolk County Community College and St. John’s University,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.  “This agreement will further that goal by providing a pathway for Suffolk students to complete their associate degrees at Suffolk and transition to St. John’s University to complete their baccalaureate degrees. The agreement between St. John’s University and Suffolk County Community College will provide students from the region with access to a high-quality, affordable education,” McKay said.

“This mutually beneficial academic agreement supports St. John’s strategic priorities of ensuring student success and expanding community partnerships,” said Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, Ph.D., President of St. John’s University.  “Suffolk County Community College is the largest community college in the SUNY system and we look forward to the continued matriculation of students from Suffolk to St. John’s. This partnership will establish a pathway for student success through the completion of their baccalaureate degrees at St. John’s University.”

“This new relationship with St. John’s will create incredible opportunities for Suffolk graduates.  It is a real testament and joy to share with an institution of the caliber of St. John’s University the education of Long Island’s greatest resource,” said Suffolk County Community College Dean of Instruction Dr. Paul Beaudin.

Suffolk County Community College prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Students transition to a variety of baccalaureate programs here on Long Island, throughout New York State and the nation.

In conjunction with the event, Suffolk County Community College and ACS have established the Breast Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Scholarship.

“We’re coming together to support women battling breast cancer, to remember those who’ve lost the battle, and to push for continued advances in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment,” Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said.
“We are proud to host this event for the first time on our Eastern Campus, and look forward to a long and successful relationship with the American Cancer Society and the search for a cure. I urge everyone who can to visit our beautiful campus to take part in this important event,” McKay said.

“The Suffolk Community College Foundation is celebrating this event and raising awareness of breast cancer on Long Island with the establishment of the Breast Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Scholarship”, explained Dr. Sylvia Diaz, Suffolk Community College Foundation executive director. “This is the first of its kind scholarship at Suffolk and we are delighted to provide this critical and humane support to students and families impacted by breast cancer in hopes that their studies will make a difference in the fight against this cruel disease.”

Suffolk Gifted $1 Million From Alumnus, Largest Ever From a Graduate of The College

SCCFoundationGala2016-5-5Suffolk County Community College class of 1978 graduate Dr. Robert Frey, seated at right, watches as family members unveil a check from the Frey Family Foundation for $1 million to the Suffolk Community College Foundation for student scholarships and aid. The gift to the college is the largest ever from a graduate of the college.

Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, pointing at left, joins in the celebration surrounded by members of the college and foundation boards of trustees.

Frey made the gift from the Frey Family Foundation as an honoree of the college at its annual gala celebration last week.

Background

Dr. Robert Frey, now a Research Professor and Director of the Program in Quantitative Finance in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Stony Brook University, was honored by the Suffolk Community College Foundation’s Annual Salute to Excellence for the contributions of The Frey Family Foundation to the college and where Frey made a $1 million donation to the college.

Dr. Frey holds a joint appointment in the Stony Brook University’s Business School and is the President of the University’s Research Center for High Frequency Finance. He has been an adjunct professor and chair of the advisory board for the Program on Financial Mathematics at the University of Chicago and currently serves as CEO of FQS Capital Partners, Ltd., an investment management firm based in New York and London, and CEO of Harbor Financial Management, his family office.
His public service and charitable activities include service on the Boards of the Guardian Angels, Hope House Ministries, the Museum of Mathematics, the Stony Brook Foundation, and the Suffolk Community College Foundation.

Frey, his wife and daughter are all Suffolk County Community College graduates.

“Robert Frey, a class of ’78 graduate and advocate for our institution, recognizes the transformative value of his contribution and the impact it will have on the lives of our students,” said Dr. Shaun L. McKay, Suffolk County Community College president. “We cannot thank him enough for his generosity.”

“Dr. Frey’s gift is the most generous support received from an alumnus in the 58 year history of the college,” explains Sylvia A. Diaz, Ph.D., LMSW, executive director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation.  “We are delighted that Dr. Frey and his family view the community college as a bridge to opportunity.  This transformational gift advances a place where lives are changed, careers are launched, promises are kept and dreams are realized.”

Suffolk Community College Open House Sunday November 2

SCCCticket

Prospective and recently accepted students and their families will be welcomed by faculty, administrators and current students to Suffolk County Community College’s open house scheduled across all three of college’s campuses on Sunday November 2 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

College faculty and administrators will welcome visitors and offer detailed information about Suffolk’s more than 70 degree and 30 certificate programs and will be joined by admissions staff to help students and parents navigate the admissions process and answer questions. Financial aid representatives will provide details about the grants and loans process, as well as the many academic scholarships available at Suffolk.

Veterans should note that campus representatives will be available to provide educational and transitional services information.

The Open House program at each campus will be important for recently-accepted students as well, and provide an opportunity to learn more about placement testing, academic advisement and financial aid.

“Prospective Suffolk County Community College students and those accepted will discover that making a personal visit to a campus is critical to the college decision making process,” said Joanne E. Braxton, Suffolk’s Dean of Enrollment Management.

“We look forward to having students and their families join us to learn about our academic programs and student support services,” Braxton said, adding “they will also have the opportunity to tour the campus with student guides who will answer questions based upon their experiences as active students. Attending open house and applying early is the best way to secure admission to Suffolk County Community College,” Braxton concluded.
