Suffolk’s First-Ever Student Radio Station Will Live-Stream 24-7, Launch 11-15 at 11:15!

scccir-logoPlaying “your fresh new variety of hits from yesterday and today,” Suffolk County Community College’s first-ever radio station will begin streaming live on Wednesday November 15 at 11:15 a.m. when College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay throws the switch to make the station live.

The new station was constructed over the summer adjacent to the college’s radio and television production studios. Programming will be pre-recorded by students and streamed 24 hours per day at scccir.com.

“This is a unique opportunity that provides our radio and television production students the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art technology that is incorporated into our curriculum,” McKay said. “Our faculty, staff and especially our students worked very hard over the summer and through the first half of the semester turning what started out as a storage room and a dream into a fully functional, live internet radio station,” McKay added. “This dream has finally become a reality.”

“Accessibility is the key to our station,” said Alan Bernstein, assistant academic chair and professor of radio and television production. “The greatest aspect of this new station is that we are here to stay.  We will be on the web, 24/7, 365 days a year, from this point forward.  So settle back and enjoy us.”

Suffolk’s pioneering  Radio- TV students who have been instrumental in the launch of the college’s first-ever radio station.

LIVE! From New York, It’s Suffolk Community College, Live-TV Production Vehicle a First for Community College in State

Suffolk County Community College has been producing live-to-web television productions for approximately eight years, but this year the college’s productions received an upgrade.

McKay, center, and Professor Alan Bernstein.

The College just took possession of a state-of-the-art high definition mobile production vehicle outfitted by a Massachusetts production tech company owned by a former student and graduate of Professor Alan Bernstein’s radio and Television Production program at Suffolk County Community College.

“‘We’ve been working on the vehicle for more than a year.” said Bernstein who added the vehicle has twice as much space.

“The new vehicle,” Bernstein said, “can handle more equipment, allows students to stand and is spacious enough for several students and an instructor. It’s a unique piece of teaching equipment unlike anything on any SUNY campus,” Bernstein added.

“Professor Bernstein and his students are now working in an environment identical to what would be encountered in a real-world live television production,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.

Suffolk County Community College Radio and Television Program alum Dave Haralambou ’90 owner of By Request Communications in Marlborough, Massachusetts, at left, built out the new production vehicle for the College. Haralambou is with Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, center, and Professor Alan Bernstein, at right.

Bernstein said his students produce up to four live web broadcasts each semester including concerts, athletics and graduation.  Bernstein said each broadcast requires up to month of preparation.

“We set a high standard – a high bar,” Bernstein said, ” and I find it most rewarding when I’m out working in the industry and work with former students. It’s a thrill.”

And thrilled, Bernstein should be. His program has produced distinguished alumni, including:

  • Keith Dinielli, Class of 1990, a producer for The Voice and two-time Emmy Award winner
  • Jason Kornweiss ’94, VP of Operations, NBC Television Network
  • Vinnie Fusco ’83, General Manager, Stamford Media Center, NBC

and many more.
