Auto Industry: How Do We Get the Most Qualified Technicians? Suffolk!

Listen, above, to automotive industry representatives speak about the program at Suffolk County Community College, On December 6 Suffolk County Community College sponsored a career fair attended by nearly three-dozen representatives from 200 individual Long Island Automotive employers.

Suffolk County Community College has, for nearly 30 years, been the leader in preparing the most qualified for certified automotive technicians.

Suffolk County Community College offers an A.A.S. degree in Automotive Technology that is National Automotive Technician’s Education Foundation (NATEF) certified and designed to prepare students for employment as automobile technicians and professionals at automotive service facilities.

Suffolk offers four separate automotive programs that includes academic classes and automotive classes that fulfill the requirements to obtain an A.A.S. degree.

The programs offered are the Honda PACT program, the Toyota T-TEN program, the General Motors ASEP program, and the General Automotive ATAC I & ATAC II programs. Subaru was added to the program last year.

“Automobiles are more technically advanced than ever creating an increasing need for highly skilled technicians,” said Suffolk County Community College President Shaun L. McKay who added that the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the number of qualified technicians needed nationwide will rise to approximately 780,000 by the year 2024, representing a 5% year-over-year increase in demand.

“Our students, as we continue to build our program, will be qualified to work in any dealership in the region,” McKay said. ‘We will be the premier training facility in the tristate region.”

Holiday Elves will you help 65 children of current students attending Suffolk County Community College?

TO:                 The College Community

FROM:            Lorianne Lueders-Yanotti, Director of Student Support Services

SUBJECT:     Holiday Elves

The Director of the Student Support Services Program has identified over 65 children of current students attending our campuses who will have a happier holiday season with the support of the college community.

Each year, the Student Support Services program coordinates an outreach effort for these families.  We hope you will adopt a child or your office will adopt a family to help provide a season of joyous memories to those in financial need.   Among other items, our elves work to provide families with toys as well as coats, shoes, and gloves for the winter months.  We can also accept store gift cards.

If you are interested in participating, we ask that you contact us at 631-451-4693 as soon as possible.  The best time to call is Monday through Friday, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.  We will then match you with a child or family and will provide you with some gift suggestions.

The college community has always generously supported this program.  We hope we can count on your kindness once again.  Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Will You Make a Difference in the Life of A Student Today?

GivingTuesday Logos

Your gift to the Suffolk Community College Foundation is a critical resource that empowers students, faculty and staff to make seemingly impossible ideas possible and turns dreams into realities, all while helping to build a solid foundation for the future of Suffolk County Community College. Your gift to the Annual Fund will have immediate and ongoing impact.

As a special bonus, you’ll receive a beautiful customized Suffolk fleece jacket if you decide to contribute $100 or more.

Here is what our students receiving support say:

“I am writing to express how grateful I am to have received the Student Hardship Grant. When I had heard that I was selected for this I was more than thrilled to know my financial burdens would be lightened. It is also very helpful to know that there are people out there who care about the success of others when it is hard enough to believe in yourself. I have experienced difficulty during school and I must say that this has helped me in so many ways.” – Resident of Southold, NY

“This foundation has honestly made me more aware of the needs of others and wanting to help those less fortunate than me. Just the other day a homeless lady sitting outside of Taco Bell asked me for spare change to get something to eat. I didn’t have any extra money so I gave her the food I had ordered for myself.”  – Resident of Coram, NY

On Tuesday November 21, 2017 Suffolk Community College Foundation Board Member Belinda Pagdanganan (National Grid, Government Relations) visited Michael J. Grant Campus Food Pantry. The Food Pantry supports 200 – 250 students and families from Saturday 11/18/17 to Tuesday 11/22/17. Suffolk County Community College students receive turkey, ham or chicken, stuffing, canned goods, desserts and donated fresh bread from Modern Italian Bakery (631) 589-7300. Winter hats, Pepsi products and other items are donated by alumni and friends of the Food Pantry.

Professor Sister Mary Ann Borrello created the Michael J. Grant Campus food pantry and coordinates among faculty, staff and student donations. Support is provided to students that connect with Lisa Hamilton’s staff in the Office of Campus Activities and Student Leadership Development. Students receive information for additional campus and community based services upon their visit.

Alumnae Tricia Wildman ’15 and Carmen returned to campus to help advise current student volunteers who were participating in Anthropology and Social Science courses.

Suffolk Community College Foundation supports by donating $950.00 for 15 cases of turkeys from campus vendor Aramark. Special thanks to our volunteers, donors, faculty, staff, students and alumni for the generous donations.
