Career Fair a Jump Start to Those Interested in Automotive Industry Jobs 12/7/16

career-fair-2016-12

More than three dozen auto employers — dealerships and service companies – will help jumpstart your career at the Suffolk County Community College Automotive Technology and Career Services Automotive Career Fair at the college’s Automotive Technology Center on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Auto companies from across Long Island have confirmed their attendance at the premier Auto Technology career event sponsored by Suffolk County Community College and open to those who are interested in automotive dealership management and repair opportunities.

Suffolk County Community College offers an A.A.S. degree in Automotive Technology on its Ammerman Campus in Selden.  It is a certified program that is designed to prepare students for employment as automobile technicians.

The programs offered are the Honda PACT program, the Toyota T-TEN program, the General Motors ASEP program, and the General Automotive ATAC I & ATAC II programs.

Today’s automobiles are equipped with complex computer and electronic systems that requires highly trained, skilled professionals who are competent in math, science and computer technology.  Communication and management skills are equally important for success in the field.

“Students in our program are preparing not only for their futures, but the future of their industry,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.

McKay urged those who are interested in careers in the automotive industry, either in dealership management or on the repair side of the business, to attend the one-day event.

2nd Annual Professional Clothing Drive at Suffolk County Community College

The Career Services and Cooperative Education Office at the Ammerman Campus will be holding its 2nd annual professional clothing drive on Monday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 12.  Gently used business clothing and accessories will be accepted on these days between the hours of 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 pm. – 4:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Babylon Student Center.

This year all clothing  will be donated to the Career Couture Boutique at the Suffolk County Department of Labor.  Career Couture is located at the Suffolk County One-Stop Employment Center and offers both men and women proper business attire for upcoming interviews and job fairs at no charge.  With the proper attire, most individuals will have a better opportunity of obtaining their next job.

Thanks to all of you, last year’s drive was a tremendous success.  I hope that we can be just as successful this year.

Suffolk Garners Share of $1 Million From State For Enhanced Career Services Targeting Students and Community Members

Suffolk County Community College is one of 15 SUNY community colleges that will receive a share of $1 million to support career centers that utilize collaborations with local and regional workforce partners to link students and community members with enhanced career services and employment opportunities. The $1 million in funding was provided by the 2015-16 State Budget. Suffolk will receive $100,000.

Suffolk County Community College’s I-PROMOTE (Integrating Programs and Resources for Outreach, MOTivation and Engagement) initiative will expand collaborations between Suffolk County Community College, the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL), Suffolk County’s departments of labor and social services, the County legislature’s Welfare to Work Commission (comprised of 15 member social services agencies in the region) and the Long Island STEM Hub. Through I-PROMOTE, students, community members, veterans, people with disabilities and underrepresented populations will be linked to enhanced career services and employment opportunities through a coordinated and innovative program that does not currently exist in Suffolk County.

Suffolk’s college-wide program will partner with NYSDOL to deliver employment services, host career fairs, and offer job readiness workshops and activities at the college, including resume writing and Introduction to Microsoft Office. The partnership will expand access to NYSDOL’s electronic systems, including Jobs Express and Job Zone for job seekers as well as professional development for college staff in case management and metrics.  Services will be offered at all three of Suffolk’s campuses, the Culinary Center in downtown Riverhead, and the downtown Sayville Center. The program will run from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017.

“This innovative program will formalize and expand our working partnership with the New York State and Suffolk County Departments of Labor to link our students to enhanced career services and employment opportunities through a coordinated and innovative effort,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “We thank Governor Cuomo for making the funds available that will enable our college to establish resources ranging from self-service kiosks to campus career services computer labs,” Dr. McKay added.
