SUBJECT:     Veterans Day Activities – 2016

In honor of Veterans Day, I would personally like to thank every Veteran student and employee for their service to our country. To mark this important day of remembrance, the entire college community is cordially invited and encouraged to participate in the various College activities that are being planned across our campuses in November. These include:

Wednesday, November 2nd – Ammerman Campus

11:00 a.m. – U. S. Army Extreme Truck Event – Veterans Plaza.  Students will have an opportunity to learn about the experiences of our military, and can test their physical fitness and gaming skills, as well as win some great prizes.

Wednesday, November 2nd – Eastern Campus

11:00 a.m. –  Please support the Student Veterans Association by purchasing a flag to be placed in the Quad in honor of someone who served. Flag sales will take place in the lobby of the Peconic Building.  All proceeds will go to support the Secret Santa program at the Northport VA to purchase gifts for children of Veterans in need.

Wednesday, November 9th – Michael J. Grant Campus
11:00 a.m. –  College-wide Veterans Day Ceremony – Health, Sports and Education Center (HSEC), MD 105.  Please join us as we honor all of our Veterans.  There will be remarks from faculty and student Veterans from each of our three campuses, as well as a special musical tribute.  The ceremony will be followed by a luncheon in honor of all of our Veterans. In addition, the Student Veterans Association will be adding 22 flags per day around the flagpole outside of the HSEC building, in order to raise awareness for the 22 veterans who take their life each day. Please take a moment to acknowledge and reflect on what each flag represents.

Veterans Week Event – November 7th – November 11th – Ammerman Campus

Please take some time to visit the “Walk of Honor” in front of the Riverhead Building to reflect on all those that have served and those that have given the ultimate sacrifice throughout our country’s history. Please feel free to take a flag from the display and place it on the walk in honor of those who served.  Also, please visit the POW/MIA table on display in the Babylon Student Center.

Friday, November 11th

Veterans Day – No Classes.  Please take this time to honor and thank all who sacrificed for and served this country.

Saturday, November 19th  – Eastern Campus

12:00 p.m. – Please join the Student Veterans Association for a 5/K fun run in honor of our Veterans.  All proceeds will go to support Beacon House as well as Angel Bikes, Inc. There will also be tables set up for resources for Veterans and hot soup will be served.

In addition, you will notice there will be green lights in various locations on all three campuses throughout the week of Veterans Day. Suffolk County Community College will display these lights as part of its participation in the national “Green Light a Vet” initiative, in order to show support and appreciation for  all those who served.  Visit “greenlightavet” online for more information.

Please plan on attending as many events as you can as a way of showing support to the student Veterans at Suffolk County Community College.  I am sure you are as proud of the service our Veterans have provided as I am.  This calendar of events is one way we can come together to show our support for each and every Veteran at the College and in the community. I look forward to seeing you during this time.
