Annamaria Monaco, PhD

Annamaria Monaco, Suffolk County Community College associate professor of Italian and adviser to the College’s Italian Club, has been elected president of the Long Island Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI). Monaco studied at the University of Pavia, Italy and earned a doctorate degree from Stony Brook University in 2004.

Monaco was the recipient of the 2012 SUNY Chancellor Award for excellence in teaching.

“The mission of the AATI,” said Monaco, “is to promote the study, teaching and appreciation of Italian culture and language in academic and community settings. AATI-LI provides its members with a communicative network among colleagues and with various opportunities for professional growth, such as informational meetings, lectures, conferences, workshops and culturally enriching events.”

Monaco, of Manhasset Hills, said the organization awards scholarships to high school seniors who have excelled in Italian, and bestows the Dante Award on an individual in the community who has promoted Italian in a noteworthy way.

Monaco leads the College’s summer program in Sorrento, Italy each year. Students travel to Sorrento for two weeks, but also travel to Florence, Venice and Rome.
