SUFFOLK COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION RAISES MORE THAN $76,000 THROUGH 30th ANNUAL GOLF FUNDRAISER

Selden, NY – The Suffolk Community College Foundation raised more than $76,000 at its 30th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, August 12, 2013 at St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Stony Brook. At the event, the SCC Foundation honored the Rotary District 7260 Foundation of Suffolk County. The Rotarians provided a gift of $25,000 which will be used to establish two important initiatives:

1) The Rotary District 7260 Sandy Relief Scholarship: This scholarship will assist Suffolk students who have been adversely impacted by Superstorm Sandy.

2) The Rotary District 7260 Sandy Relief Childcare Assistance Grant: Working in conjunction with Suffolk County Community College’s Childcare Centers on both the Ammerman (Selden) and Michael J. Grant (Brentwood) campuses, this effort will provide funding for students who have been financially impacted by Superstorm Sandy and need financial support to receive childcare for their children.

“This was a very special event for everyone involved, said Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College. “The generosity demonstrated by the Rotarians reflects their commitment to supporting our community of scholars and providing help to neighbors who are in need.”

“We were thrilled to be able to give a gift of scholarships and child care totaling $25,000 to help Hurricane Sandy victims to pick themselves up from the situation they are currently in,” said Cornelia Gevinski, Outgoing District Governor of Rotary District 7260 Foundation of Suffolk County. “This is the result of funds donated by Rotarians around the world who care about our communities locally and worldwide.”

The golf event was supported by community residents and individuals from across the College. It also included members of the Suffolk Sharks golf team who volunteered their time and talents to raise money through a special “Beat the Shark” accuracy contest.

“We are extremely grateful to The Rotary for establishing scholarships for our students who were impacted by Superstorm Sandy,” said Rick Guarino, Executive Director of the SCC Foundation. “Together we share a commitment to fostering education and service to our community. We are thankful to all of our sponsors and participants for making this year’s Classic a tremendous success.”

In addition to Rotary District 7260, major sponsors included: Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook; J. Petrocelli Contracting, Inc.; Oil Heat Institute of Long Island; Astoria Federal Savings; Emtec Consultants; Heartland Golf Park, Inc.; Grassi & Co.; Hofstra University: National Center for Suburban Studies; Lizardos Engineering; Walsdorf Insurance Agency Inc.; Bethpage Federal Credit Union; Labor Management Cooperative Committee; and Riverhead Buick GMC.
